President Buhari’s visit to the United States to meet and talk with President Trump was televised. The image of President Buhari still haunts me till today. The deal he struck also haunts me.
Having engaged on many fronts with ‘white’ leaderships, President Buhari’s posture looked very much like someone who was overwhelmed by his host. He looked like the host had the lead and he was simply following: he was operating from an unequal terrain with his host having the upper hand. Much more, not only was he subdued to a point of only being grateful to be hosted and seen with the President of the United State, he also felt elated with the massaging of his ego by the praises President Trump offered him.
The outcomes of their short deliberation seem to attest to my concern. President Trump had always declared that during his tenure, America shall be first for him. He showed that clearly.
He saw the situation to exploit in the Nigeria situation – Boko Haram insurgencies. He found the niche with which he could sell his support for Nigeria to the Americans – the killing of Christians. He then wrapped the deal – selling of weapons to Nigeria to fight the insurgency. President Trump just sealed a new trade agreement for America worth millions of offshore resources from Nigeria.
What was President’s Buhari’s sale for Nigeria? Nothing!!! He went to America to bring back debts to the country. He could not negotiate a counter trade of any significance. He came back buying again from the Americans.
President’s Trump invitation to President Buhari to visit the White House was calculated for the sales of ammunition, simple!
Truly, President Trump thinks America first indeed.
